My Teaching Philosophy
- Curiosity, Experimentation, and Mistakes are crucial to one’s learning at any age in any field. A teacher should encourage and guide all three.
- Exposure to multiple songs/concepts builds familiarity with applying one’s knowledge and stimulates the brain more than perfecting a single song for months at a time.
- Learning general music theory, history, and culture deepens the experience of playing one’s instrument and builds musical comprehension and appreciation.
-Focus on building good technique, reading skills, and responsible habits
(e.g. taking care of one’s instrument and practicing)
-I play with the student to build their observational skills
(i.e. similar to learning a language)
-Ensure the act of learning is fun and motivating
(i.e. games and rewards are a must)
-Focus is on building good sound quality and listening skills
(i.e. connecting what one hears with physical technique)
-We negotiate on songs, genres, and concepts to learn
(e.g. student picks a song and I pick an exercise)
-Investigate and analyze song recordings/videos to see what makes something sound good
